Acetylene Lamp is a reoccurring character from the Osamu Tezuka Star System. He is a tough, imposing man usually associated with big business or the law. Lamp appears in Tezuka's works mostly as a villain, especially in Astro Boy canon, where he has appeared in almost every series to date. In the Jungle Emperor Leo canon, he is portrayed as an animal hunter.

Description[]

In Jungle Emperor (manga)[]

Lamp candle

For the majority of the manga, Lamp is focusing on obtaining the moonlight stone for himself. He realizes that he could make more money and be more powerful than hunting animals.

He suddenly joins Ham Egg on his expedition and manages to grab the moonlight stone. Lamp later gets tricked by Adam Dandy into giving him the stone by losing a bet. Once he is found by Higeoyaji (Mr. Mustache), Lamp tells him where his nephew Kenichi is (since he went on the expedition with them).

Later on, Lamp finds Adam in New York and demands that he gives him the white lion Rune for revenge. When Adam doesn't comply, he sets his circus on fire. They both have a dreadful end to their lives by getting trampled by circus elephants.

In Leo the Lion (Onward, Leo)[]

Lamp (Leo the Lion)

In Episode 1

He appears in the first episode hunting for the white Lion, Leo, and the other animals from the commands of Captain Bad. He also assists Capt. Bad in kidnapping Christopher’s grandpa, Dr. Sugi. Lamp is able to place a tracking device on Leo in order to follow him after he escapes from the tribe village. However, Leo scares him and Capt. Bad out of the jungle after finding him.

In The New Adventures of Kimba the White Lion (Jungle Emperor 1989)[]

Lamp appears in episode 22 - Reunion and is hunting for the Magical Karabos Tree that lies in the Panja's Forest, but when Kenichi stops him from shooting the animals, Leo was protected by the tree, and the tree teleported into a desert, when he calls for his helpers to pick him up.

In Jungle Emperor Leo (1997 film)[]

While not having any real involvement, he does appear as a cameo in the audience at the circus, in awe of seeing Rune in the circus act.

Trivia[]

  • The reason why Acetylene Lamp sometimes has a candle on the back of his head in some of his appearances is due to an inside joke among one of Osamu Tezuka's childhood friends. One of his friends had a dent on the back of his head that was so large and flat, one could stand a candle on top of it. Tezuka used this friend as a model in order to create this character.
