Description[]
The meerkat’s body is slender, with a distinctly slim, tapering tail and long thin legs equipped with powerful claws. The face is pointed with a rounded forehead and dark eye patches and crescent-shaped ears. The fur is typically grizzled grey, tan or silvery-brown in colour, with dark, transverse bands sometimes visible across the back, and a characteristically black tail tip.
Social Characteristics[]
Meerkats belong to the mongoose family. They weigh about the same as squirrels, and live in the deserts and grasslands of Africa. Being social animals, they live in colonies. They are expert diggers that dig elaborate underground burrows.
Predators[]
Meerkats are always on the lookout for their predators or natural enemies, most of which are large birds of prey. Eagles and other predatory birds attack, kill and eat meerkats. Meerkat predators also include large snakes and mammals such as Hyenas.
